Ketty Fraser

In 1888 my grandfather, Colin Fraser Sinclair, his wife Margaret McKenzie and their 1 year old daughter immigrate to Chile for the promise of a better life, opportunity and land allotment to Europeans. His older brother, Alexander Fraser Sinclair, and his first wife Mary Dorward follow in 1889. Both brothers and their families initially settle in the green fertile lands of Southern Chile, 16th region, Araucanía. But as time goes on both make their way to the desert of Northern Chile, 2nd Region, Tarapaca; and the possibilities of more lucrative endeavors. On December 17th, 1931, in Oficina Centro Laguana, my father is born, Daniel Fraser McKenzie. My grandfather, Colin Fraser Sinclair, dies December 25th, 1932 in Iquique. I (Ketty Fraser) was born in Mapocho on March 1st, 1936; and later live in Iquique. The Fraser-McKenzie family has successfully grown and established strong permanent roots in Chile. In 2018 my daughter, Maria Alejandra del Carmen Ceballos Fraser, and I visit Inverness retracing some of my grandparents’ steps before they left Scotland to Chile 130 years ago. I hope to be able to visit Scotland again in the near future, and discover more about the Fraser family Colin Fraser Sinclair left behind.
