Daniel Fraser, born in the Frasers of Lovat family and clan in 1787 in Antrim county of Roxbury, moved to Sweden where he became head engineer of Motala Verkstad, a shipbuilding company that would later build the world’s first oil tanker. Daniel Fraser received the Knight’s of Vasa Order by Royal Decree for his services, and his grand daughter Agnes married my great grandfather Sven Alexander Almqvist, born 1840.
Sven Alexander Almqvist built the world's first oil tanker in 1878 together with the Nobel brothers of Sweden who started the Nobel prize.
The ship was deliberately not patented but given as a gift to all of mankind. In fact, the first generation of oil tankers in the world, all built by my great grand father, were named after the world religions and philosophies (the Zoroaster in 1878, followed by the Buddha, Mohamed and Sokrat after Sokrates the Greek philosopher).
Sven Alexander was very proud of his Fraser of Lovat descent, through his grandmother. His son, Harald Almqvist, my grandfather, upheld Scottish highland traditions in Gothenburg until his death in 1982 with tartans, clan maps and pictures of the Frasers of Lovat. He was very particular with the fact that we were descendants of the Frasers of Lovat bloodline, and only very distantly to the Frasers which is another clan and should not be confused.
Please email me on erik.almqvist@sensestrategy.com and I will send you more information on how the world's first oil tanker was built in 1878 by a Fraser of Lovat descendant (my great grand father Sven Alexander Almqvist).
I would also be most obliged for any information on Daniel Fraser born in 1787 in Antrim, Roxbury, born Fraser of Lovat you may have and in particular his bloodline and connection to the wider Fraser of Lovat family. For his later life in Sweden we have it well documented, information we can send to you.
A bit more on Daniel Fraser born 1787: He was educated in London by Henry Mandslay, inspired by Thomas Telford the Scottish engineer who was a leading engineer of the industrial revolution, and married Agnes Story of Chester 1815. He died in Charlottenborg near Motala Sweden in 1849.
